SEAGOING EXPERIENCE
First experience with “run abouts” and small power boats learned to handle them as a young boy. Worked with brother trapping bait fish for fishing
piers as first commercial enterprise. Have owned or used small power boats for decades.
Got first sea going job as a Mate on the CAPT CRAMER, a party fishing boat. Maritime school was a natural choice to pursue a career at sea.
FREIGHT VESSELS
Only sailed as Third Assistant Engineer for three months and then promoted to Temporary Second Engineer on an emergency basis due to an
engineering officer shortage created by the Viet Nam War. Stood watch in steam plants, maintained deck machinery, hydraulic systems, and gantry
cranes in addition to maintaining the Engine room equipment. Gained early knowledge of boiler water treatment, fuel oil transfer, and bunkering
procedures due to immediate promotion. Worked extensive overtime since ship only had minimum number of engineers required by the certificate to
sail. Gained experience much quicker than normal due to political situation. Served aboard the following vessels:
Vessel Type
SS MORMACBAY C 3 A
SS AFRICAN GLADE C 2 Personal experience with major shipboard fire and subsequent investigation by regulatory bodies.
SS AMERICAN RACER Racer Class Vessel
SS EXPORT AGENT C 3
SS PIONEER MING C 4
SS MORMACDRAGO C 3 Automated
SS AFRICAN METEOR C 4
SS DELTA AMERICA Racer Class Vessel
PASSENGER SHIPS
Passenger Ships carried extra fresh water distillers, ships service generators, large air conditioning machines, large domestic refrigeration systems,
refrigerated cargo boxes, large sewage treatment plants, elevators, and required extra maintenance and annual shipyard periods. This added to a
diverse gain in experience as a Marine Engineer. In addition to watch standing duties there was overtime worked maintaining all the extra equipment
on board. The boilers required extra maintenance due to the required reliability and hard steaming rates. Sailed both as Third Assistant and Second
Assistant Engineer. Served aboard the following vessels:
Vessel Type
SS MONTEREY Converted Mariner to Passenger Vessel
SS SANTA BARBARA Converted C 2 to Passenger Vessel
TANKERS
Tankers give Marine Engineers a unique opportunity to expand their safety skills. Huge cargo pumps on the larger ships must be maintained. Tight
schedules and high firing rates of the boilers even in port to pump cargo to make getting the required maintenance done a challenge. Served as first
Engineer on these vessels:
Vessel Type
SS SANTA CLARA Chemical T 5 Tanker
SS SUROULA Crude Oil Tanker T 5
SS KENAI Large Crude Oil Carrier
CONBULK CONTAINER AND CONTAINER VESSELS
Large container vessels with reduced crews and unmanned engine rooms at night are possibly the most challenging engineering positions today. The
Chief Engineer must be able to work on all systems including computers and electronic controls. All engineers are on day work and with the change to
motor ships due to high fuel costs; the maintenance work is more demanding than on a steam vessel.
The Chief must be a “hands on” engineer if the required work is to be accomplished. He must also be an excellent manager and able to manage the
time available for repairs. Every member of the crew must be a firefighter and aware of the safety requirements. In the Engine Department the on board
training is done by the Chief Engineer. Worked seventeen years on this type of vessel as both First Assistant and Chief Engineer.
Vessel Type
SS HAWAIAN QUEEN C 4 Container Vessel
SS HAWAIAN CITIZEN C 3 Container Vessel
SS CALIFORNIAN C 4 Container Vessel
SS TRANSONEIDA T 5 Converted to a Container Vessel
SS TRANSCHAMPLAIN T 5 Converted to a Container Vessel
SS PRESIDENT TRUMAN C 6 Container Vessel
SS PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT C 6 Container Vessel with Gantry Crane
MV PRESIDENT MONROE C 9 Container Vessel
MV PRESIDENT F.D. ROOSEVELT J 9 Container Vessel
MV PRESIDENT JACKSON C 10 Container Vessel
MV PRESIDENT KENNEDY C 10 Container Vessel
FISHING VESSELS
Introduction to a sailing career. Sailed a Mate on these vessels and learned the basics about all around boat handling, engine repair, and working at
sea.
Vessel Type
CAPT CRAMER Party Fishing Boat
CAPT CRAMER II Party Fishing Boat
CAPT ROBBINS Party Fishing Boat
GENERAL INFORMATION
In addition to maintenance and repair, and ships safe operation of the engine room equipment, work as the Chief Engineer on a modern vessel requires
management skills, training crew member in all aspects of duties, firefighting skills, and knowledge of many computer programs. Safety inspections,
upkeep of equipment with an extensive preventative maintenance programs, annual inspections by the U.S. Coast Guard and continuing machinery
surveys by ABS are included in the Chief Engineer’s scope of duties.
While with APL work included taking delivery of three new vessels out of the shipyard, going on sea trials, working with vendors and regulatory
bodies. Attended dry dockings and/or shipyard periods for repairs. Very familiar with regulatory bodies and classification society practices and
procedures.
OTHER EXPERIENCE
2007 Prevailed in the Case of Dixon vs. TMS for the Plaintiff represented by
Walkup, Melodia, Kelly, Wecht & Schoenberger. Plaintiff injured while working on the
USNS MERCY
2007 Assistant Chief Engineer in the Bank of America San Francisco Data Center.
Duties included operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment, UPS Systems, four 3500
KW Gas Turbine Generators and Environmental Air Conditioners. Retired Oct 1, 2007 to
pursue Marine and Industrial Consulting positions.
Other duties as Assistant Chief Engineer includes training new Journeyman engineers, and
Supervisor. The shifts consists of two to four licensed engineers. The San Francisco
Data Center is a twenty three story high rise building with other tenants besides
Bank of America. The engineers attend to all tenant’s technical needs.
2004 Retained by Hill Rivkins & Hayden LLP as an Expert Witness in the case of the
SSG EDWARD A. CARTER who represented the American Bureau of Shipping,
Defendant in the case. The case involved the death of two engine department personnel
In an engine room fire. The case never did go to trial and ABS was successfully defended.
The research work presented to the court was a factor in the case being dismissed.
1999 Assigned as Permanent Chief Engineer on the M/V PRESIDENT KENNEDY from 1996.
The vessel is 57,000 horsepower propelled by a twelve cylinder slow speed Sulzer Engine.
Computer Consultant for APL on the NTC software program including input of inventory,
and PPM program.
1991 From 1977 until 1991 sailed as both First Engineer and Chief Engineer on various vessels
listed previously in this CV.
Licensed Real Estate Broker in California

Service Marine Chemicals for high pressure boilers, cooling systems, fuel oil treatments,
Tank cleaning chemicals, boiler cleaning chemicals for both fire side and water side
applications for general ships cleaning and maintenance. Work required specialized
knowledge in boiler water chemistry, investigation of boiler casualties, service calls to
vessels to help with cooling water corrosion problems, and distiller scaling problems, etc.

MEBA Union Hall as both 2nd and 3rd Assistant Engineer. As temporary 2nd assistant
engineer on the SS AFRICAN GLADE, the ship experienced a major boiler fire in the port of
Bermuda. Assisted in extinguishing the fire, saving the ship, and supported ABS and the
U.S.C.G. in the investigation of the incident. Participated as an Expert Witness on
behalf of Farrell Lines. As a result of this effort, offered a permanent assignment as
second assistant engineer with Farrell Lines.
